DIY wedding flowers

How confident are you feeling about your DIY wedding flowers?

Are you asking yourself:

  • Will I save money if I do it myself?
  • How much time will it take to make my flowers?
  • Should I be using fresh or fake?
  • How big should my bouquet be?
  • What colour theme should I choose?
  • What flowers are in season?
  • How much will it cost?
  • Who should I make buttonholes for?
  • How do I organize myself?
  • How far in advance should I think about my wedding flowers?
  • Why are fresh flowers so expensive?
  • Why is my florist charging me so much?
  • How many flowers will I need in my bouquet?
  • How far in advance can I make my bouquet?
  • How big should the centrepieces be on the tables at my reception?
  • Do I need to make pedestal arrangements for the church/venue?
  • Should I be making thank you bouquets?
  • My Mum says she’ll help out – should I let her?
  • I’ve never arranged flowers before – help!
  • I want to get involved with doing my own flowers – but I’m scared of messing it up.

Fed up with all the worry – at what should be a really exciting time?

Let me help you.

Here at Julie Davies flower workshops I’m here pass on my skills and confidence so that you can have the flowers you’ll love on your very special day.

Via regular videos we’ll discuss:

  • how to work up a plan of action for getting your flowers made – without throwing yourself into a panic
  • I’ll take you step by step through how to make your own handtied bouquet
  • want to know how to put together buttonholes? I’ll show you
  • not sure what equipment you’ll need to buy? I’ll show you what I use
  • thinking of making table arrangements? No problem, I’ll show you how
  • what are the advantages/disadvantages of fresh and silk flowers
  • and much, much more … if you’ve got a question share it with the group

DIY wedding flowers checklist

Doing your own wedding flowers is such a fabulous idea. It means you can bring your own personal, creative touch to your wedding – and if you’re planning on silk flowers, you can start making well ahead of time – but there are so many decisions to make along the way.

What I won’t be able to help you with everything

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to give you all the answers – and I think it’s only fair I make that clear from the outset.

  • I won’t be able to tell you how much your flowers will actually cost
  • I won’t be able to advise you on specific flower varieties
  • and, I won’t be able to tell you how to get access to a flower wholesaler

And the reason why?

  • The price of flowers varies according to the season – and will depend on where you live
  • If you’re looking to colour match your flowers to your dress and décor details it’s so hard to do this with any certainty when we’re talking on social media – photos don’t always reflect colours in real life.
  • Wholesalers are for commercial florists – they won’t sell to the general public.

How are you going to get round these difficulties?

Don’t forget that by signing up to FlowerStart – DIY wedding flowers you’ll learn so much.

With this knowledge you’ll be able to have confident discussions with your favourite High Street florist. When your order from them they’ll be happy to advise you on specific varieties. And, if you’re going to use silk flowers – take samples of your fabric with you and colour-match in daylight (rather than under in-store lights).

Please note:

FlowerStart Wedding is hosted in a special Facebook group – so you’ll need to be on Facebook. Access to the group costs £100 a month (you can renew at any time) – you can pay using the PayPal button below, or email me on julie@juliedaviesflowerworkshops.co.uk if you’d prefer to pay by bank transfer.

Not sure you want to commit?

Check out this recent testimonial from Vanessa (June 2021):

“When my daughters wedding was re-arranged as a “micro” wedding, with a larger celebration when restrictions allow, I was very keen to make the intimate event include as many DIY elements as possible. As a keen gardener, I have always had vases of flowers from my cutting garden in the house but doing my daughters wedding flowers was a whole different thing. Could I create arrangements that would last and stand up to “public’ scrutiny? Could I give my daughter the look she wanted? Could I create flowers like those on her Pinterest board? Could I attempt the brides bouquet? There was so much I wanted to learn to give me the confidence to tackle the “big” day. So many questions and then I stumbled on Julie’s FlowerStart wedding – Your DIY wedding flowers group on Facebook it seemed to be the perfect place to start.

Julie’s videos were such an answer to prayer. Knowing what each of us liked and were hoping to achieve she covered all our individual questions week by week whilst teaching new techniques or new ideas that we might not have thought about. In her gentle and friendly manner she got us to think about whether our ideas were practical given our other responsibilities on the wedding day and where to focus our time. Learning which things could be prepared ahead of time, asking questions when there were things I wasn’t quite sure about and practising techniques she demonstrated really gave me the confidence to give it a go. I knew how long things would take, how to prepare and organise my flowers, how to structure my arrangements etc. Watching Julie create the different projects I was planning, took the panic out of the process. It was a joy to do the flowers rather than what could have been so stressful.

I loved getting feedback from the other group members and was inspired by the arrangements they posted. We all felt comfortable to ask each other and Julie what was on our mind, no question was too stupid. My daughter wanted our 2 dogs to be ring bearers at her wedding and they needed to be “properly dressed’ for the occasion. I mentioned to the group that I was thinking of attaching flowers to their collars and if anyone had any tips. The following week Julie did a session on precisely that, giving a simple, safe and effective way to achieve what I was thinking of. Net result I was able to make two collars that I was very proud of, and more importantly than that my daughter and the dogs loved (well at least tolerated, in the case of the dogs!!), thanks to Julie’s advice. Seeing how to do it made all the difference.

I really looked forward to the weekly videos. I loved it when I could join Julie live and be able to get feedback in real time, but also having the back up of videos to watch and re-watch when other things got in the way. I now feel so much more confident to give all sorts of floristry projects a go and am now looking forward to creating more DIY wedding flowers for my daughters second celebration next year.

Thank you Julie and my fellow DIY wedding flower ladies.”
