Running my business through the summer holidays

I’ve had lots of enquiries recently asking whether I’m running any of my flower arranging workshops over the summer. In previous years I’ve taken my pop up classes to Belmont House and out to Anna’s Country Flowers. The short answer is no.

As with any working Mum I find it really hard to balance my work commitments and being present for my family during the long summer break.  This year, I’ve made a conscious decision that I want to spend more time with my family and so I’ve decided not to organise any of my “pop up” flower arranging workshops over the summer months.  However, Anna and I will be back in September to host another flower class down on her farm – watch this space.

A bit like an elicit love affair I’ve been working on my business in secret – often setting up office behind a locked bathroom door!  And taking advantage of the early riser amongst us to get a couple of hours’ work done on the computer before breakfast.  Having taken the decision not to work in the visible sense I didn’t want things to drift, so I’ve written myself some goals to see me through the summer.

So far I’ve ticked off quite a few items on my list:

  1. Photoshoot with Samantha Jones – not dogs this time – but a shoot for FlowerStart, my 4-week online flower arranging class.
  2. I’ve sought advice from Alison Wood via her amazing Facebook business group on technical matters relating to the automation of my current FlowerStart rollout and additional queries about breaking this class down into four one-off practical flower arranging projects.  More on this when my website relaunches in the autumn.
  3. One of the most exciting things I’ve been doing is market research.  I’ve decided to print some of Samantha’s images and sell my own line of floral greetings cards. I’m becoming well versed in the language of paper quality, postage and packaging – again watch this space!
  4. I’ve also been getting to grips with the branding on my blog posts on Pinterest.  I’d love to hear what you think of my efforts so far – drop me a comment at the end of this post.

One thing that has stumped me so far is writing my book. I’ve managed to write a short ebook (you’ll have to wait for my website relaunch to get your hands on it).  Time – and peace and quiet – is my constraining factor. I also need to do some voice overs for my next batch of videos. In between the water fights and BBQs this has proved to be quite difficult!

Rest assured that although I’m not out and about teaching workshops I am still running my “host-at-home” packages, where I bring my workshop to you.  If you fancy a flower arranging night in, name the date and tell me where you live and we can take things from there.

I hope you’re enjoying the summer.  I’d love to hear about your goals and dreams – perhaps we could gee each other up and achieve them together?
